A Vatrushka from Childhood at Gastronomic Café “Mechtateli”

Gastronomic café “Mechtateli” presents a new bun. November is either good or nothing at all! And there's at least one piece of good news this month — a new bun from gastronomic café “Mechtateli,” created in collaboration with another friend of the restaurant, Anastasia Dubrovskaya. Nastya, once a PR manager for many of St. Petersburg's restaurants, has now found a new calling: she launched the project Shhkatulka, where she collects rare vintage tableware and serving pieces. A 60s Finnish-brand dessert plate, an English faience teapot, Riga porcelain tea sets, the thinnest and most delicate cups of Japanese porcelain — Nastya selects everything herself, carefully packs it, and ships it around St. Petersburg and to other cities. A love for things with history is what inspired Nastya to create Shkatulka.

Love and a tender attachment to childhood memories — that's what it took to come up with November's bun for “Mechtateli.” It became a vatrushka from childhood, prepared by the gastronomic café's chef Vitaly Papp. It's something of a paraphrase of a familiar, beloved flavor, done in the style of Mechtateli — with puff pastry and a sunny little circle of apple chip. Here's what Nastya has to say about it: “Curd vatrushka has always been tied to childhood for me — I went to school across from New Holland, and it was my favorite recess snack. Time goes by, and I still think of it whenever I walk around the island. unshakeable, hard to compare anything to them. So I wanted to make a vatrushka, but an unusual one. The idea of puff pastry appealed to me right away — I love French aesthetics, drinking coffee, and eating a croissant off beautiful tableware.” All through November, gastronomic café “Mechtateli” will have the vatrushka from childhood (260 rubles), served on a vintage little plate from the Shkatulka collection. +100 to aesthetics, plus the same to coziness, minus the same to autumn blues. That's the math formula we're living by this November.
